UKG★Mix

This was a site I built over a weekend. I was hungry for more DJ mixes for my iPod and ended up with a bookmark folder of about 15 sites to visit to get new mixes. It annoyed the hell out of me having to visit each site to download certain mixes & when friends asked where I got a specific mix, I wouldn’t be able to remember.

So I decided to build UKG★Mix. A Site which would amalgamate really good DJ mixes that I find.

Secondly, most DJ Mixes don’t include any album art so I felt this would be a good exercise to practice & learn some new graphic design skills and create album art for mixes which needed some!

Initially, I built the site in TextPattern (a CMS I am really comfortable with). After I had built the site, I decided it’d be nice & really handy if the site would send a post to a Twitter account everytime a mix was added.

I tried several plug-ins for TextPattern to enable this functionality but had no luck.

Not wanting to settle without this feature, I downloaded the latest installation of WordPress, installed that on my server (using the infamous 5-minute install) & tried a Wordpress to Twitter plug-in. This worked straight away so I decided to re-build UKG★Mix in Wordpress.

I decided on this for two reasons. One, I’d get the functionality I wanted and two, I’ve never developed a site in Wordpress so it was a good learning curve.

I’m really pleased with how it has come out – it’s almost exactly like my initial photoshop mockup & pleasantly surprised at how easy WordPress is to work with!
